Coach Andrew "Andy" Hinson

Andrew ‘Coach’ Hinson was a 1953 graduate of Bethune Cookman College. He was a 4-year varsity letterman in football, captain in his final two season. He was a distinguished gentleman of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., pledging in the second line to ever to cross the campus. He later became a professor, educator, and coach returning to lead the helm of the Wildcats from 1976 - 78. Where like his mentor, the great ‘Bunky’ Mathews amassed a winning record and brought home the SAIC eastern conference championship in 1976. He would go on to coach at Cheyney University. Coach Hinson, was a proud alum of Bethune Cookman often telling tales of his time on campus singing in the choir and traveling the country with Mrs. Bethune. He often would speak of her impact which he passed on to his players and any young person that was within his tutelage. He formed great friendships with other alum, Cy McClairen, John Chaney, Harold Lucas, and others that would be the hallmark of the Bethune-Cookman spirit that any attendee of the university would carry on with them. His wife, Clare (Campbell) Hinson c/o ‘58 and over 40 members her immediate and extended family also attended the university as well as a couple of their five daughters.  In his family we chant BE HOLD...! Coach was later inducted in to a few halls of fames, including BCU’s. The players that went on to play professional sport or became professionals in their field of study still called, until his transition, to reflect on old times and how he impacted the people that they have become. Those continued relationships were greatest part of his legacy. In honor of his lasting legacy, his family would like to give back to the school that gave this kid from Camden, NJ a lasting sense of belonging and pride. Bethune Cookman College (University) provided a foundation for scholarship, athletics, and faith that he carried with him until he was called home on October 24, 2025 at the age of 95. Please join us in giving to the school and the football program that made Andrew ‘Coach’ Hinson an institution and the man that he was to all of us.
